Dude, I did not think anyone else I knew had read this series! AWESOME. And so, so word on the range of female characters, as . . . I realize I said in my post, too, but it bears saying again. I love how many and varied they are and how many different interesting relationships with each other they have.
The recapping thing got less noticeable as the book went on, I think - it was worst right around the timeskip with Diora growing up. Once events actually started being chronologically close together it was less of an issue.
(But why so many ladies with A-names, Michelle West? D: D: I want to be able to keep them straight, really I do!)
