Heh - well, I mean, DWJ definitely has some types that she uses in YA novels. I don't think I'd ever mix up Cat and Christopher, because they read very differently to me, but if you switched out, say, David and Howard it might take me a little while to notice the difference! So I don't think it's entirely you.
However, while DWJ's Cranky Girls are totally a Type as well, I do not care, I ADORE THEM ALL. So what if Hildy and Helen and Awful have one or two things in common? They are AWESOME things!
