I think possibly they mean that because, you know, girls like fabric and colors and things, they'll write a lot about . . . flags? Or something? Instead of the blood and gore and military maneuvers that are proper to a battlefield? I DON'T EVEN KNOW.

I don't know about you, but I feel lost until I've gotten to a chapter in a book describing the ground.
