First thing to come to mind: the author of Full Metal Alchemist, classic battle shounen that I was babbling about yesterday, is a lady! EPIC FIGHT SCENES UP THE WAZOO.

Sherwood Smith, author of the Inda books, aka My Favorite Fantasy Series Ever, focuses on a battle culture and has some truly epic battle scenes also.
