Yeah, I think that's part of what jarred me -- I went in expecting a commensurate level of realism, and I got something that wasn't trying for that, and found it disorienting. Which is not really the book's fault! I think the surrealism works in a way for what she's trying to do, as you say, which is more on the scale of overarching effects than individuals.
