Huh! I had such a strong ???? reaction that it never occurred to me to think of it as potentially a worldbuilding signifier, but that does make sense as an option. (iirc, it's followed up by a remark that he spent some time in Israel as a student, which is a reason it makes perfect sense to know Hebrew, but the 'of course' comes first.)
