I kept trying to think of a good comparison author -- like, I feel this sort of Dramatical Romantical Historical Fiction is a very clear subgenre and there is one author who sort of defines it, and yet I cannot remember who it is! So maybe I made that person up.

Anyway, it's the kind of Female-Centred Historical Epic I feel like you don't get a lot now, except maybe from Philippa Gregory; historical romance has morphed into its own genre with very different rules.
