Honestly, the parts where Kay quietly peels off from the Villainous Young Hothead to go organize all all his villagers to survive the winter and essentially creates a nice medieval commune where everyone respects him for his hitherto-underappreciated skills are pretty satisfying in a Mercedes Lackey sort of way.
