Lots of second-world fantasy coming-of-age-through-adventure stories for tween & teen girls; the protagonists were often wryly funny or defiantly sensible; talking animal companions definitely an element; romance often present but definitely less obligatory than in today's YA and love triangles not yet The Thing.
