It definitely felt like it was in dialogue with other ... hmm ... post-heterosexual Utopias of the time? Gate to Women's Country, The Female Man, some themes in Butler, etc. -- but saying this makes it sound like quite a different novel than it is, the book is actually much less About Gender than I thought it would be from the description, and much more about destructive human impulses in general.
