I know Thomas Arnold from Tom Brown’s School Days, where he is the wise kindly super Christian headmaster who when he sees Tom heading towards the bad gives Tom a frail blond waif who likes poetry to look after, thus Making Men of both of them (there’s also an extremely evangelising epilogue where Tom finds out Arnold’s died).

I am now strangely drawn to Florence Nightingale :D
