I was trying to pinpoint exactly why I kept thinking of Ellie as younger than she was, and I think a big part of it is the prose style and another part of it was just the intro of her playing with her dog -- that felt like such a kid-having-adventures moment, even though the book gets into its heavier themes pretty quickly after that.
