My guess is that this is more likely to be a case of convergent evolution -- in particular I suspect Hardinge is drawing from the fairy tale about the girl with the seven swan brothers -- but I wouldn't rule it out! Definitely some similar Sad Kids In Weird Woods Energy either way.
