also very much reminded me of all the ~inspiring~ narratives where everyone thought this physically disabled person was intellectually disabled as well, but then it turned out they were secretly a genius who just couldn't communicate it!
Because we can respect and treat someone as an equal as long as they have at least normal intelligence on the inside; if they'd actually been intellectually disabled, then warehousing them and forgetting about them would be fine, I guess.
