Gone Fishin' is kind of a bizarre book. Technically the sixth in the Easy Rawlins mystery series, it's actually a prequel, and not in any way a mystery - Easy's amoral friend Mouse is like, "I'm going to go take some money from my stepfather and possibly kill him!" And then he does. There is no mystery here, is what I'm saying.

Instead, it's sort of a gothic (the Southern variety, not the kind with ghosts and abandoned mansions) and sort of a coming-of-age/loss-of-innocence story, set in the isolated Texas town where Mouse grew up. The cast includes a solitary old lady, a hunchback, and a witch; the plot has murder and revenge and haunting backstory, and Easy spends most of it sick and traumatized in bed while Mouse is out setting up murder plans, going "SMALL TOWNS ARE CRAZY, I WOULD LIKE TO GO BACK TO THE CITY NOW WHERE PEOPLE ARE SANE." (And one can't really blame him.) It's a strange and dreamlike read, and I'm not really sure how I feel about it. (

Fortunately for me, I have time in a plane and a three-hour layover coming up this weekend. I smell a field trip to the Tattered Cover!

Hahahaha, the plan is actually to take two of the, um, six books I picked up at the used bookstore a few weeks ago.

(Also, I am seriously spending like EIGHTEEN HOURS in California, and a significant chunk of that is devoted to Mr. Bird. *giggling* But if there are bookstores, I will look!)

Current book I am (re)reading: PILLARS OF THE EARTHHHH by Ken Follett. It is a BRICK.

Also, surprisingly bad. I didn't remember it sucking this much the first time, BUT there will be enough of it to get me through the first two planes at least!

I think you should leave cranky notes in the margins and then leave it somewhere for someone else to find. :D

It is the only Ken Follett I have ever read! Someone I knew freshman year of college who was obsessed with monks shoved it at me.

...now I am tempted to get the trade paperback edition and do just that. It is kind of eyerolling and rage-inducing. Most of the comments would be TL;DR, GENTLE READER.

That is such a shame, there are so many better things for the monk-obsessed to read!
