If it helps, I've been watching S3 and now S4 with Becca, having entirely skipped S2 except for a very brief summary and the occasional "that's a Season 2 thing! *half-sentence explanation*" pause from her, and it's worked just fine.

(And the occasional "Oh, I do love [character]!" "Yes, it's so great now that he HAS HIS CHARACTERIZATION BACK after S2!!" exchange.)

It's good to know that it can be done. I am not usually a selective reader/viewer, but while Season 2 was airing, I kept hearing such bad things about both the art and the story except for a couple of stunning Miyazaki-like episodes, I just wasn't sure I wanted to lose the time. Life is too short for bad television, unless that's actually what you intended to watch in the first place. (Life is mostly too short for television, full stop, for me, anyway.)
