skygiants: jang man wol lifts opera glasses and smiles (opera glasses)

Last week's costume polls were not even a competition; Jang Man Wol's denim extravaganza and jidow's cap (thanks [personal profile] gogollescent) trounced all other comers, as -- I'm not even going to pretend to be unbiased here -- well it truly should have.

The last few episodes have been relatively restrained in terms of changes if not the actual outfits, but this week Jang Man Wol is back up to full steam with nine costume changes that range all the way from 'trying EXTREMELY hard' to 'astonishingly I don't think you really tried at all.'

1.

We never get a full view of this dress, but what we see looks cute -- I can't figure it the pattern includes actual words or that's an optical illusion, but I kind of dig the blue scribble effect.

Obviously if you're going out for an ice cream soda, you want to make sure the lips and nails pop. And check those pointy shoulders!

2.

I more or less dig this dress from the front, though admittedly the black straps give a faint bondage vibe, which one might find a pro or a con. That said, it's a little unfair to judge this outfit as-is, because Jang Man Wol is still in the process of accessorizing it when it's introduced.

I actually disagree with Manager Gu here, I think the tiger-print layered over the brown stripes is kind of a neat look. Trust your heart, Jang Man Wol!

That said, I don't love several other elements of this dress -- I think the pattern would work longer with a skirt, and also, why do those straps just end weirdly at the side seam? -- so I'm not mad she decides to change before their rice cake date.

3.

Rice cake date outfit!

My favorite thing about Jang Man Wol's fashion is that when she goes for a theme, she always commits. Look at that puffball-stuffed hair!

The black-and-white speckled nails that definitely were not that color in the previous scene! How long did it take her to change for dinner? Who knows. Who cares. She is READY to eat RICE CAKES now and that is really what matters.

4.

Another outfit that we only ever see from the waist up, which is enough to appreciate the trim but not much else.

Glasses and hairstick always a good look for her, but without a fuller picture I'm not sure this one will be a top contender.

5.

OK, now we're halfway through the episode and it's time for some GLAMOUR.

I genuinely think this is one of the most gorgeous outfits she's worn so far. The dress, the fabric, the earring, the butterfly hair ornament -- I'm trying to figure out which early twentieth-century painter she's giving me vibes from. Mucha, maybe? Anyway, my point is, this outfit is absolutely art.

6.

Between the long skirt, the lace collar, and the candy-colored florals, this dress lands somewhere between 'gothic heroine' and 'prairie housewife' and I don't really know if I'm feeling it.

On the other hand ... accessories .... like, can one argue with a Jang Man Wol with a rose between her teeth? I'm really not at all sure that one can.

7.

I wasn't necessarily ready to rate this black gown higher than any other Jang Man Wol black gowns, until I noticed the buttons down the front.

I think they're roses? I'm SURE they're great. Like the green gown above, it's not a particularly elaborate ensemble, but the fabric and cut are classy, interesting, and extremely flattering. (Accessories definitely not on the same level, though.)

8.

Okay, here it is: the most boring thing I've ever seen Jang Man Wol wear.

I mean the obvious kicker is that she looks incredible in a plain white button-down. (Also the hairstick is very nice.) Still! What's going on! I'm concerned! (Admittedly the show gives us no idea what she's wearing from the waist down, it could be sparkly lime-green lace for all I know.)

9.

Back in lacy florals for the final outfit of the episode, though this works for me a lot better than the longer dress she wore earlier.

Between the puffed sleeves and the pink nails, it's very whimsical-garden-party; whether you think the red purse is an unfortunate clash or a charming accent, I leave as an exercise for the reader.

I was going to go with the adorable rice cake date outfit, but then that dark teal green dress came and stole my heart. The black lace at the neck, the earrings and hairstick and long flowing hair--she looks like an Art Nouveau water nymph (she also reminds me a lot of Yuuko from xxxHolic in this outfit). It's really a pity Jang Man-wol doesn't seem to like wearing dark green as much as she does black, bright red, or white, because the colour looks *amazing* on her.

This is much more fulfilling than watching a full ep myself would've been. Thanks!

I knew outfit number 1 was Moschino before I even saw the writing on it in the close up! The Moschino scribble print collection is iconic.

Her accessorising is great as usual, but the real star for me in this set of photos is the interiors. Exquisite!

Green glamour nearly got me but I can't resist the hair pom-poms.

Ultimately I had to go with rice cake date (the hair pompoms!), but if we could have seen more of the next outfit down, it might have won out. It has sort of... extremely fancy sailor suit vibes? I was digging it.

The green thing is extremely Art Nouveau and makes me think of Tiffany glass more than anything else.

I had to go with the green one, but the first one gets an honorable mention because she totally ordered that ice cream soda specifically to match her nails and lips, which is really going the extra mile.

My vote's for the first one even though I'm not sure I can explain why. I like the pattern?

The chain print dress disappoints me because Moschino made a MATCHING HAT with the same exact print and she's not wearing it.

I absolutely love green glamour and want to wear it every single day of my life, but I had to go with rice cake date simply because of the hair pompoms.

(Admittedly the show gives us no idea what she's wearing from the waist down, it could be sparkly lime-green lace for all I know.)

So there's an instagram account of the show with lots of behind the scene photos--I checked and that plain white blouse actually has some interesting lace cutout details going on at the bottom! No idea why they didn't show this though.

I had to go with the rice cake date for the comprehensive commitment to theme, but if I were voting for accessories alone it would have to be the rose in mouth + antique telephone combo.

that is VITAL context that greatly enhances the gothic heroine look!
