Dec. 11th, 2009 11:28 amOkay, so while I do love Monster more and more with every volume I read . . . whenever I get new 20th Century Boys I am reminded why it is indeed the ULTIMATE URASAWA MANGA OF MY HEART.
(Out of . . . the two I have read . . . shut up.)
I am a terrible person but I find EVERYTHING that Detective Baby Cho does to be HILARIOUS. I just want to pinch his little cheeks! He is such an amazingly adorable fail!detective. Okay, sometimes that leads to tragedy and woe, admittedly. On a related note, he and Jan from Monster should totally hang out. Separated at birth! Sometimes Urasawa has a type, and that type is dorky idealistic fail!detectives all starry-eyed about ladies who are ten times more competent than they are.
Speaking of: Kanna continues to be amazingly badass, and also hilarious - I love how she is completely hardcore and competent still totally, one hundred percent a ridiculous teenager. I am kind of sad that Brittany-chan ended up victim-ized but at least we still have Mariah! I hope she gets to be awesome.
Meanwhile, in the other storyline, I was going "OTCHO OTCHO OTCHO :D :D :D :D" from the moment the "monster in the basement" was first mentioned. (Look, there is no one else in the entire cast capable of that much badassery, except maybe Kanna. (Also, Otcho vs. Johan? That is a match I woud pay to see.)) And how much do I love this volume's flashback? Dorking out over The Great Escape (AWESOMEST MOVIE) and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.! Kenji inventing the secret soil-pockets. KENJI. <3333333333 And his friends think he is the COOLEST EVER for it oh Kenji. I also liked the dorky, dorky manga artist, and how one of the hardest things for him to realize is that if he stays in prison he will never get to finish writing his manga. Urasawa's thesis is clearly "DORKS WILL SAVE THE DAY."
How is it two months until the next volume!

Date: 2009-12-11 06:37 pm (UTC)I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one! From the moment that was mentioned, I was going ". . . Okay, this is either a badassified Kenji (unlikely) or it's Otcho. Yeah, it's gonna be Otcho." And manga-artist dude! ♥ I love him to bits. "I'm going to get out of here! I'm going to help you escape! And then I will finish my manga."
GOD I KNOW. *_* At least you still have Pluto to read, right? You'll love it. :) (Although this is the manga that convinced me Urasawa feeds on the tears of the innocent. It won't just tug your heartstrings, it will RIP THEM OUT AND STOMP ON THEM.)

Date: 2009-12-11 06:50 pm (UTC)Yeah, there was no way it was going to be Kenji. *giggling* Kenji is another one who is never, ever going to be that cool (which is why he is so awesome!) Otcho, however, is like "digging tunnels through maximum-security prisons? NO BIGGIE." And manga artist dude = best self-insert character ever.
TRUE TRUE. . . . ahahaha like that was even in question. THANKS, URASAWA.
