Okay guys, while we're on the topic of musicals, can we talk about the new Les Mis trailer?

Because my first reaction is that it is going to be AMAZINGLY over the top and melodramatic and quite possibly a really terrible movie -- oh my god, the armies of ORPHANS! the armies of CONVICTS! the armies of PROSTITUTES! -- but still AMAZING.

Also, the first photos reveal that there's going to be an elephant statue. AN ELEPHANT STATUE! Gavroche gets his elephant statue from the book, guys! Someone on staff was committed, and whoever they are, I love them.

Gavroche's elephant is the thing I always tell people about when trying to convince them to read the book! "Yes, it's 1200 pages long," I say, "but GAVROCHE LIVES IN AN ELEPHANT!"

. . . strangely, this doesn't usually work.

I have a distinct memory of making one of my friends read the elephant bit entirely sans context back in middle school.

It was not quite as effective as the time I read to her aloud about the four bikers of the apocalypse, but she was amused.

I also love the bit where Gavroche accidentally saves the life of a soldier and then cheerfully runs off to bring some ammunition to shoot some more soldiers.

It looks better than I was expecting it to. I mean I'm skeptical because the musical is just an experience, and I don't know how well a film can capture that experience. But at the very least I actually really love their rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" so at least is hope that the soundtrack will be well worth it.

THIS. On watching the trailer I immediately started trying to figure out how I can watch this with people with whom to ENJOY AND MOCK MERCILESSLY! unfortunately all the people I'd want to watch it with are on the wrong coast :)

I am, um, cautiously and warily excited, although I have Opinions about some of the casting and would feel much better if I knew Russell Crowe could actually sing (I have no idea).

When I think about it I'm a little bit weirded out that there may be a generation of kids who think about this movie the way I think about the original Into the Woods staged filming. "THIS IS THE EXPERIENCE EVERY STAGING WILL FAIL TO RECAPTURE!"

. . . I am not nearly so weirded out as I am HILARIOUSLY EXCITED, however.

I am still really sad that the original proposed casting of Geoffrey Rush for Thenardier turned out to be a lie. I mean, Helena Bonham Carter is still amazing and will be amazing, but Geoffrey Rush was BORN to play Thenardier!

(I also would feel much better if I knew Crowe could sing.)

He's been lead singer in a rock band that's toured and released albums. I've never heard any of their songs, though, so I don't know if it's the kind of band where singing ability is considered an asset or a liability. All I really know about it is that it has one of those names that obviously came about after somebody said "That would be a good name for a rock band".

Yeah, I saw some of his clips and they sounded fine for the genre, but I'm having trouble mentally translating to how he might sound as Javert. I mean, I hope he doesn't sing Javert like he's in a rock group! That would be very weird.
