The gods had specific goals for Gen and Attolia and Eddis and Sounis, though, and the events of this book were about achieving those goals. Get the Medes out of the region. Make a unified space where the peoples could protect each other, and have land there where the people of Eddis could go before the volcano exploded. And then stop before becoming the next Mede. The gods of Eddis spent all this time pushing Gen to this specific war, and now that he's there, they're helping.

Also, gods help those who help themselves. I am sure that Gen laid some fuses in the right place so all Eugenides had to do was drop a spark.
