OMG, this sounds like a book I must run out and buy Right Now for Parenting Reasons. Because what you're reading as "bad" sounds to me like "targeted towards middle grade readers". As in - those are teens and pre-teens, arguably the most over-confident demographic. They really do need to be told to listen to people and not assume they're always right and not misjudge and not consider themselves experts on everything, and they need to be told this repeatedly with lots of examples. And if it takes hot and heavy Lesbian Drama for them to read through those examples - let there be Lesbian Drama.
