Apr. 9th, 2010 11:46 amFor reasons that will be obvious to
genarti and
mercuriazs at the moment and will probably be obvious to the rest of you in a week or so, I have been thinking about dance lately. Since moving to New York I've taken classes in salsa, tango, and East Coast and West Coast swing, all of which are fun dances that I really enjoy (with the possible exception of tango, which has never been my favorite). It's pretty easy to find places to do these casually and socially in NYC, although I don't go do that anywhere near as often as I'd like. I've also taken a few Regency and Victorian dance classes, which are awfully fun as well in a structured-group-dance kind of way.
What I can't find anywhere in New York, and what I have just realized that I miss kind of ridiculously, is waltz. Waltzing is so much fun, guys! I love it because a.) it is awesomely spinny and b.) it's pretty cool that of all the social dances, it's the one that relies least on the lead-follow dynamic (this is not the place for an analysis of gender in dance, and practically speaking I am totally fine being a follow in swing and salsa and getting to do the cool turns and stuff, but the partnership in waltz is kind of a nice thing) and c.) waltz music is often ridiculously gorgeous and d.) did I mention that it is a super spinny dance? So spinny! And it has been two years since I have done any waltzing at all. (Okay, that is a lie; last year in Montreal I taught
genarti cross-step waltzing on the steps outside the museum of archeology and history, and that was pretty cool. But sadly you cannot waltz for too long on the steps of a museum in Montreal because people might actually want to use them for other things.)
So I went looking, and I found all these groups that do exactly what I am craving out of an afternoon of dance, which is a lot of roterie and cross-step waltzes with some swing and polka and one-step and so forth thrown in to keep things from getting boring. AND NONE OF THEM ARE IN NEW YORK. They have them around Philadelphia and Boston and San Francisco and everywhere else that one would expect! But New York, the city that is supposed to have everything, hates waltzing and also freedom. ;_; I am full of sorrow. I may have done some rebellious solo waltz steps in my office bathroom yesterday once I figured this out just to reassure myself that I still remembered how. Which I am sort of glad no one walked in on. But.
And now that I have been pointlessly sulky at you all: hey, have an equally pointless icon meme! Stolen from just about everybody at this point.
1 – How do you feel right now?

2 – What’s your favourite pastime?

3 – Do you consider yourself a strange person?

Some people may have implied this. I can't imagine why. *dignified*
4 – What’s your main fandom?
. . . I should stop before I list like twenty more things, shouldn't I.
5 – OTP?
I have some! I don't have icons of many of them. Here are a few:

6 – How do you describe yourself?

7 – What’s your favourite icon to use besides your default?

8 – Do you have an icon of your future husband/wife?

9 – Do you have a WTF icon?
10 – How do you feel towards love?

11 – Saddest icon?

12 – Happiest icon?

13 – Crackiest icon?

Date: 2010-04-09 08:08 pm (UTC)You know, not like you have ages and ages of spare time, but one thing you could do is look around at some of the NYC-based facebook groups and try to drum up some support for a waltz event. You might find somebody with the expertise/knowledge of available spaces.
And depending how fast you want, I do have maybe 30 waltzes ...

Date: 2010-04-09 08:31 pm (UTC)Well, mostly I just meant that I would like to marry a DEFENDER OF JUSTICE who is also an amazing dork. *solemn*
Also he is one of the few people I have icons of who is not a teenager which these days would make me feel kinda skeevy.Though, you know, now that I think about it, Kanna is pretty awesomely low-maintenance for a kid. It would totally be easier than having to worry about having my own!
And certainly less painful, pregnancy is terrifying.Anyway the most important point about Kenji is that he could never judge me for being dorky because he would always be infinitely dorkier himself.

Date: 2010-04-09 08:34 pm (UTC)That's actually a really good idea. (If only I . . . used facebook ever. >.> But that might be good motivation for it!)
Also, if it is waltz music you are offering, I never say no to that. :D

Date: 2010-04-10 12:17 am (UTC)(Also, I know this is not actually a solution to the root problem, but: if you do ever want to meander Bostonwards for one of those waltz events, you have a couch available and at least one person who will gleefully accompany you and has been meaning to go to something like that anyway. I'm just saying.)

Date: 2010-04-10 03:00 am (UTC)Man, I miss dance so much some days. I've made a couple of efforts to do things like swing and salsa since leaving high school, but I just can't deal with paying $15 an hour for a 10-week beginners course when I could pick up most of it in 2 hours. Plus, I am still occasionally weirded out at the idea of dancing with a partner instead of doing choreographed steps in a group, which is where my heart will always be.
I...do not think I would suit waltz, spinny or not :D

Date: 2010-04-10 03:35 am (UTC)Hee - it's the opposite for me, I love doing choreographed stuff, but the idea of doing dance for performance is so much weirder to me than doing partner stuff! (Although I do really, really enjoy historical group-type dances. It's tragically hard to find places to do those too!)
