I was so expecting that trope, tbh, and then I was SO DELIGHTED when it was completely averted. He watches and intuits stuff from observation! He makes effort to acquire a guidebook!

The only dramas I've seen have been relatively recent, which probably skews my perspective. I may be watching Sandglass soon, though!
