. . . there are no Heroes posts up on my flist yet. Guys, I need to babble! Where are your babble-enabling posts?

Here, I will start you off with discussion points:

- Does Sylar using the name "Gabriel Grey" make it any less likely that Alejandro will be the next name on the long list of dead POC, seeing as he knows by now he can't access powers anyways? *crosses fingers*

- How long will Molly stay out for? Will Mohinder blame Matt for this tragedy in the life of their daughter and leave him, continuing the cycle of Divorced Dads on the show?

- Along the same lines, is the return of Rena Sofer imminent now that Nathan has shaved the Man-Eater off?

- How kickass is Monica? A female character introduced without a rape threat, guys! :D!!!

- How much did Nathan's childhood-memory tidbits about past Angela/Kaito make me crack up? (This one, I can answer for you: A LOT.)

Bah, homework.

- Well, that was for expediency. I'm not saying he's grown a conscience! Just that he is presumably smart enough/non-instinct-driven enough not to go into KILL mode on Alejandro when Alejandro is the only thing stopping Maya's power from killinating him, and he can't guarantee being able to use the power after.
- Mohinder still needs Matt now to hear what Molly's thinking, at least. But I see trouble in paradise. :(
- Me too, to an unexpected degree. And the kids actually got lines, Shati! I am so excited by this!

I wanted to wait until I saw it again because for once there is PETRELLINESS to talk about, and I was too busy bouncing up and down to actually think about it.

*giggles* I saw your comment in other-thing-related posts, and hence I excuse! JUST SLIGHTLY. But I am not used to going first. It is extremely disconcerting. :O

- :( I think you are right, but I live in hope that he will get more interesting instead. I feel, though, that it is a slim hope. Next question: will the timing of the death of Alejandro (and thence the death of Wonder Twincest) match suspiciously well in timing to the reunion of Nathan and Peter?
- Two and a half episodes sounds like a good guess! *chalks it up* My guess is one and a half episodes, based on previous coma track records, but that's only if they keep covering the storyline consistently. I think they will, though - it is pretty central.
- ME TOO. I was way too excited just hearing her get referenced.

Whedon at least mixes up his issues. These are all just PARENTS PARENTS PARENTS.

On Firefly, only the Tams had anything approaching parental issues :-P

At least we know he's evil? No good guy would just a line like that.

I dunno - the Tams are the only ones whose parents we actually see on Firefly, ever. (Jayne gets his hat. But that's it.)

And on Buffy - Buffy has daddy issues, Willow has mommy issues, Xander has issues with both his parents, Spike has sire issues, Tara's parents try to convince her she's a demon, and Oz doesn't actually seem to have parents. And Dawn was made by monks. Am I missing anyone?

Oh, man, he had better be evil by this point. If the writers seriously think he is being cute then SMASH.

Jayne seems to get on great with his Ma. Mal mentions his mother in a favourable light. Ditto Kaylee and her Dad. no issues.

Spike doesn't even know who his sire is. (Stupid retcon HATE IT)

You missed Adam. And Wesley. But:
Giles' only issue is normal paternal expectations from his father and grandmother. Cordy's only issues were tax evasion, but she still seemed to get on with her parents. Non mentioning doesn't mean issues - that's assumption. As it's a Joss show, I would assume non-mention means no issues.

BUT EVERY SINGLE HERO has parental issues. EVERY SINGLE ONE. And they're not even all different ones. That's not over angsting, that's lazy story telling.

Oh, I'm not arguing that it's lazy storytelling. *grins*

But I guess I would rather just actually see a proportional number of parents and families - which we do, on Heroes - than not see them at all, which is what happens on Whedon shows. I find the array of Heroes issues to be more realistic in that sense, because at least the parents are an actual presence. As a high schooler? My parents were waaaay more of a presence in my life than they appear to be in any of the Buffy kids'.

This is a difference in storytelling preference, though, and I've had this argument with other people before, too. *grins*

I think the reason I'm okay with the masses of family issues in Heroes is that the only relationships that are important in Heroes are family, or sibling-like friends. And so all the drama and the tension is in husband-wife, parent-child, and sibling-sibling, and since Heroes is not a subtle, introspective, nuanced show, that means a lot of . . . dysfunctional isn't necessarily the right word, because I think most of the families on the show do function, but -- a lot of families with issues.

It also means that virtually all the important and positive relationships are familial ('cept for Hiro and Ando), which works well enough as a balance for me. I like that Heroes is so occupied with family and family history. YM is free to V, though!

(I don't agree that no mention means non-issues -- there were a lot of places in Angel where the lack of mention is really weird; I would expect, and don't remember getting, some hint that Cordy's parents know she's in the hospital in the S1 finale. But I don't mind the INVISIBLE PARENTS on BtVS, because when I was in high school I pretty much ignored the existence of parents.)

Somebody (I forget where) pointed out that the cheesy flashback montage was actually leading up to a conversation where Monica admits that she doesn't have the community spirit she thinks she's supposed to, that she's only concerned with herself and her family, so maybe it was . . . irony? Yessss. She's so...so very not a damsel in distress, is I think what makes me love her the most. She has problems, she deals with them. And in a non-specifically-gender-related area, I love it when any character on this show figures out their powers quickly and uses them proactively.

Yes exactly. Monica kicks distress in the FACE. Literally!

And so very much so. She's smart about it and she's active about it, and she has a power that you can be proactive with. (Claire's as proactive as she possibly can be considering what her power is, but . . . . it tends to involve a lot of pain/involuntarily damsel-ish situations in the process. Monica has no such problem!)
