One of my favorite books about this era of American history is "The Age of Federalism" by Stanley Elkins and Eric McKitrick. It's long, and you can skip the bits that don't look interesting to you, but I found their takes on Hamilton, Jefferson, Adams, Madison, and the controversies they had with each other very readable and (I thought) insightful.
