These just sound so weird. I'm trying to think of books that go from 0 to DOOMED like that, but it's hard because I kind of find that unappealing anyway to start with.

I feel it's a sign that a book may have overdone its grimdark when a reader doesn't even remember that one of the characters is a Holocaust survivor, because it just got crowded out somehow.
