Nov. 9th, 2006 07:23 pmAs re: Dracula - reading it for the first time in several years and having so much fun. This book makes me laugh lots and that is why I love it. Oh, that wacky Jonathan Harker. I have also been informed that we are watching clips from 'Buffy vs. Dracula' in class for the discussion, which: HAHAHAHA.
However. Dorm bathrooms? I have no problem with conserving energy; however, switching the lights off suddenly when I am naked and in the shower, especially when I have just been reading Dracula, is not, as you might think, wildly entertaining. No love, me.

Date: 2006-11-10 02:37 am (UTC)Though I have yet to get to anything more fun than
Bram Stoker being all "LOOK! LOOK, I RESEARCHED TRANSYLVANIA! THIS IS WHAT TRANSYLVANIA'S LIKE, GUYS! I KNOW BECAUSE I DID RESEARCH!!!"Jonathan Harker waxing lyrical about the countryside and all those quaint susperstitious peasants.no subject

Date: 2006-11-10 02:46 am (UTC)And the first few pages of the book are awesome! *snickering* I mean. It is like,
Jonathan Harker: La la la. Transylvania is pretty.
Peasants: You're going to die.
Jonathan Harker: These peasants are so quaint. I must note down that goulash recipe for Mina. Oh dear! I am having bad dreams of a future dark and terrible fate.
Peasants: This is because you are going to die. Hello, Transylania? HERE THERE BE VAMPIRES.
Jonathan Harker: It must have been the goulash. Darn foreign foods.
Peasants: Yes. LIKE YOUR BLOOD.

I wrote a paper on it, my friend.

Date: 2006-11-10 02:59 am (UTC)(I just reread past the part where Van Helsing is like "haha! Polygamy is wacky fun!" Oh, I love him.)
I also just start giggling every time Quincy shows up. Because why is there a Texan cowboy in this novel. Why.

It might have even balanced out cavorting Anthony Hopkins. But nothing can overcome

Your face is like unto a
Block of uncarved wood.
I was reading the book this time around, and thinking wistfully of what different casting would have done for Jonathan.
NorringtonJack Davenport! He would have pulled off the Cheerfully Oblivious Lawyeritude with style.no subject

I have perhaps been skipping around enough of a bit to declare Van Helsing the wacky bad-English-speaking vampire-hunting professor of my heart.

Date: 2006-11-10 03:39 am (UTC)Also I have the huge annotated edition edited by Leonard Wolf, so there are scads of footnotes which are occasionally awesome vampire lore trilogy but are sometimes details from Transylvanian travel guides or recipes for all the food Harker keeps describing. It's like "LOOK I RESEARCHED TRANSYLVANIA TOO AND MORE THOROUGHLY AND IN THE 2OTH CENTURY, TAKE THAT STOKER!!"

Date: 2006-11-10 03:40 am (UTC)But. Yes. Van Helsing = crazy crazy love. Even if, you know, he's

not the most competent at, like, actually keeping vampire victims alive. >.> *pats Lucy*

Melodramatic vampiric hijinks will commence shortly, do not fear! But there still remain the classic Harknerian gems. *fond* Other favorite part of the book -
Dracula: *STORMS IN, ALMOST DRINKS JONATHON'S BLOOD, BREAKS MIRROR IN WHICH HIS REFLECTION DOES NOT APPEAR*
Jonathan: It is very annoying, for I do not see how I am to shave now. D:

Date: 2006-11-11 07:42 pm (UTC)I believe the significant difference is that in Dracula, the quaint eccentricities and occasional stupidities of the characters make me want to pat them fondly on the head. In Frankenstein, they make me want to beat Victor Frankenstein to death with a poker.
