I did get fooled in the last Inspector Alleyn novel I read because the silly sidekick was like "I think this guy is the villain!" halfway through AND THEN HE REALLY WAS. I just never expect the silly sidekick ever to know what he's talking about!
But generally I feel like mysteries/gothics have trained me to pay attention to Suspicious Writer Focus AND Suspicious Writer Avoidance in a way that doesn't really seem to be the way suspense works, or at least not the way Francis works.
