And really, Laon picking that time to be codswalloped? His whole character was a bit murky, but nothing in the book convinced me that he… did actually feel a fraternal kind of love for Cathy. Which could bring up a lot of questions about Cathy's reliability as a narrator, about him as a character, except I'm not sure if it was intentional!
