It was a weirdly Big Deal at my high school, too, but, like, a very specific kind of Big Deal -- like, the kids who did theater DID THEATER and very rarely ever did much else, probably because Doing Theater often meant being at the school every day until 9 PM and thus didn't leave much time for anything else. (I look back at my high school schedule often and wonder, how? and WHY???)
Also the Players had their own board with a president and treasurer etc. so if you had political aspirations you could probably also satisfy them that way, which might have been another factor. (No teachers or administrators were involved in the running of the theater program, at the time I was in high school. We absolutely refused to submit to anything so plebian as educational authority and hired our own adult supervisors - generally local out-of-work actors - who were paid by and answered to us, the students. Authority enough for anyone!)
