I kept worrying that this was going to be the kind of story where Everyone Gets Hardened and Crosses The Line Eventually

OMG, I really cannot handle stories like that. If I suspect a books is heading that way, I shut it and set it down and don't come back. So I'm interested to hear how book 3 turns out!
