YES to so much of this, especially ♥ ♥ ♥ re: Ali and Nahri being HUGE NERDS, both separately and together. Like you, I am okay with an endgame 'ship for the two of them, but I would be really delighted if they continued to be buddies.

In my heart of hearts, I hope Empire of Gold ends with Zaynab in charge -- she's the only one diplomatic enough to reliably handle any political incident more complicated than spilled soup -- and everybody else going off to their enthusiasms: study medicine, geek out about architecture, write poetry, do archery, whatever. I CAN DREAM.
