There are a few moments in the earlier books that just hit this balance of, like -- they're terrifying and numinous by very dint of being so unexpectedly forthcoming, which is a really incredible thing to pull off. The gods serve a plot function in this book, and things play out as they want, but they're only terrifying in very expected ways ...
