Oct. 23rd, 2020 10:02 pmDear Yuletide author,
Thank you so much for writing for me! In all the years I have done Yuletide, I have never failed to be overjoyed by the gifts I've received; if you write something that makes you happy, I guarantee I will be delighted with it also.
I am always interested in women interacting with each other, ensemble stories, community-building and community dynamics, revolutionary politics, romance built on loyalty and trust, and weird and antagonistic interactions with the divine! For my requests this year I'm generally more interested in expanding on canon than in going AU in either plot or setting (with one small exception), but I'm broadly pro crossover if you have a brilliant idea for one.
Some of these canons deal with some pretty serious topics, and dark themes are A-OK if it makes sense for the story, but I tend not to be into graphic and gratuitous violence. I'm happy for romances to include sexual content but I'd prefer it wasn't the entire point of the fic.
And now for the specific requests!
Fandom: 7 Seeds
Characters: Iwashimizu Natsu, Ban (7 Seeds), Saotome Botan
Details: I truly love everyone in this post-apocalyptic bar and I'd honestly be happy to receive literally any fic about pretty much any characters in the tagset, but I have a couple prompt ideas for these in particular over at my letter. (This is an any-of-these-characters request rather than an all-these-characters.)
- for Natsu, I'd love more postcanon fic about how she continues to navigate her place in the now much larger post-finale community -- her long arc is fantastic, and I love how far she's come and also that it's clear that she's not done growing, by a long shot. I think the dynamic with Semimaru ended in a really interesting place in the story and I love that she's still wildly confused and ambivalent about it by the end of canon, so please feel free to further explore that as a successful/unsuccessful/developing romance -- I'm very interested in what it feels like for Natsu, who's used to safely pining in the secure feeling that nobody will ever be romantically interested in her, to have to plainly face the fact that someone clearly is, whether or not you think she reciprocates -- but I'm also really interested in her relationships with Matsuri and Hana. (I think the whole messy complicated negotiation of The Ango And Ryo Situation is really well depicted in the manga, so please feel free to dig into that too if you feel up to it, but it IS definitely very messy so please also feel free to completely ignore it!)
- Ban is a genuine cryptid whom I love very much and I'd honestly just really enjoy anything that focuses on him a little more; I'd especially love to get a weird postcanon adventure with any of the kids he doesn't spend much time with over the course of the show (okay yes I wrote a whole Ban/Chisa manifesto along with a lot of other rambling about 7 Seeds romance opinions but I promise you don't have to subscribe to my Ban/Chisa manifesto if you don't want) but I'd also be really interested in his perspective on things that go down in canon
- I'm so curious about Botan's role as more or less The Only Adult, and especially about her mostly-offscreen transition from the stern survivalist who scares the Summer B kids in the first few chapters to the laid-back nudist from the later chapters that we all know and love. So I'd be interested in Botan-POV for some of the early stuff in canon we're not there for, and also in fic about her role in the new society postcanon; I'm especially interested in seeing interactions with Ran and Aramaki, who both also have filled the 'only adult' role in very different ways.
Fandom: Deeplight - Frances Hardinge
Characters: Quest
Details: I'm fascinated by Quest's incredibly dramatic backstory, and would love to hear more about it! I'm especially intrigued by how he came to found a crack team of god-murderers and what that particular adventure even looked like, but anything that focused on his story would make me really happy.
Quest is perhaps my favorite of all of Hardinge's morally ambiguous mentors; he really is remarkably chill for a man who destroyed all the gods, triggered a localized apocalypse, and lost all his friends in the process ... canon gives us such a bare-bones version of this endeavor and I am desperate to know more! I would truly love to read about a tight-knit band of would-be atheists sailing around the islands in a deicide boat -- how did he even recruit like-minded people for this? What was that fellowship like? -- but, uh, I absolutely understand if you're not up for creating a bunch of completely doomed OCs for the holidays this year. I would also love to read about any other stage of his journey, whether that's his arguments about religion with the woman he became a monk for, his relationship with the Hidden Lady, his feelings about the changes that came to the Myriad after he killed the gods, or his perspective on Hark and the events of the novel.
Fandom: The Queen's Thief - Megan Whalen Turner
Characters: Costis Ormentiedes, Kamet (Queen's Thief)
Details: Honestly, I would love to get the Costis and Kamet cut of Return of the Thief -- there's so much going with them behind the scenes of that book that we only get brief glimpses of! -- but anything about their dynamic would delight me.
I made the mistake of rereading Thick as Thieves right before Return of the Thief and it's been the Costis and Kamet show 24/7 in my brain ever since ... I do absolutely ship them and would love a fic that was Full Romance, but if you don't, that's totally okay, I'm just really invested in them being invested in each other! The drama of Costis choosing to go back and protect Kamet rather than stay with the army while the war is starting is incredible and I would love to see a fic that focused on that and/or their months of hiding after, but I'd also be really happy with anything that took place in between Thick as Thieves and Return of the Thief, or postcanon.
Other prompts: I was recently pitched a theory about Kamet being favored by Immakuk and Ennikar because of his translation work and I absolutely love it, so if you want to explore that, I'd be very into it! Also, I do love Pheris and Kamet's mentorship of him, so if you're interested in focusing on that and would like to write about that as well or instead, I'd love to see that explored too.
Fandom: 힐러 | Healer
Characters: Any
Details: This is another canon where I'd be thrilled to read any fic you wanted to write about any characters inside or out of the tag set, but this year I'm especially interested in Young-shin's coffeeshop dads and their incredible coparenting ...
Yes, this year I am in fact actually straight up asking for a coffeeshop romance. I am shocked as well. However! When canon gives you, as incidental side character backstory, "a widowed public defender invites his former client, a petty thief, to work with him at his coffeeshop, where they end up co-parenting his adopted daughter," it seems almost like a crime that no one's actually explored this in detail before? This is a gift that Healer has given us and I do not think we have collectively appreciated it to a sufficient degree. Please feel free to write this for me as either an incredibly tropey romance or an adorable found family fic, I just want kdrama's absolute best dads to get their due!
That said, if the coffeeshop dads aren't singing to you, I also love both Jo Minja and Choi Myun-hee with the power of a thousand suns and would love any fic you wanted to write about either or both of them. I love Minja and her sushi and her knitting and the detective with a starry-eyed crush on her (I ship it in a way where I actually ship it, and I also ship it in a way where he pines after her forever and it never goes anywhere, it's ALL GOOD); I love the backstory! I could read about pirate radio forever! And for years I have been hoping that someone would write me some of this imaginary sequel series about Minja, Myun-hee, and Daeyong fighting for justice.
Fandom: 호텔 델루나 | Hotel Del Luna
Characters: Sanchez (Hotel Del Luna), Kim Yu Na | Jung Soo Jung
Details: This is an either-of-these-characters request, not necessarily the two of them together -- I'd love to read more either about these characters outside and after the bounds of the show, whether it's focused on how Kim Yu Na navigates the world as a ghost wearing a human suit, or how Sanchez continues to interact with the supernatural postcanon.
I am FASCINATED by the character concept of a teen ghost who possesses her murderer's body, and even more by the specifics of how Kim Yu Na lives her new life -- she's surrounded by wealth and luxury, but knows from the start exactly how empty it is. I love her class consciousness, her absolute unconcern for what her classmates think of her, and her investment in helping other kids who died unjustly! I'd love anything about what her future looks like postcanon, but I'll admit I was a little bummed when she decided to get rid of her second sight at the end of canon; if you wanted to change her ending so she could still see other ghosts, I'd be A-OK with the story of Kim Yu Na, Undead Ghost Detective. And if you wanted to bring her back to work at Hotel del Luna again under new management, I'd be delighted by that too! If Sanchez ends up as her sidekick somehow that would honestly be very funny to me, but is in no way required.
As far as Sanchez himself goes -- man, he's just a sweetheart! I find his interactions with the supernatural very endearing! Would love to read about his friendships with any of the other cast members, would also love to read about him being harassed by ghosts or gods and rescued from either peril or awkwardness by his more supernatural-savvy friends ... Also, remember when the Grim Reaper came and hung out in his living room? That was truly great for me. To be honest, I did kind of get the vibe that the Grim Reaper was hitting on him in that scene, and I am absolutely here for a Grim Reaper/Sanchez postcanon romance if you feel like taking a deep dive into the Extremely Niche Spirit of Yuletide, but do not in any way feel obliged to follow me down that road if you're not feeling it.
Fandom: The Talk of the Town (1942)
Characters: Leopold Dilg, Michael Lightcap, Nora Shelley
Details: Is there a more perfect OT3 than judge/radical/stressed-out schoolteacher? I submit to you: no! I would love to read absolutely anything about these delightful idealists bickering about legal ethics and falling in love.
I wrote for this perfect threesome for Yuletide a few years ago and then immediately got bitten by the bug and now all I want is to force someone else to write them for me .... I care very much about the completely equilateral triangle of the romance and I also care very much about the legal ethics and would love a fic that incorporated both these things, but I promise I will be just as happy if you prefer to focus on either the romance or the labor politics rather than tackling both at once!
As a sidenote, if you matched with me on something else and are now staring at my prompts or the length of the canon in question and wishing you hadn't, this is probably a good alternate option -- the movie is relatively short, and also, a delight.
