Yeah, I used to rank this one among my favorites, and over the years have gotten increasingly uncomfortable with the A-plot -- I love Joseph's POV, though, and the difference between Mendoza's perspective on herself and him, and his perspective on himself and Mendoza, and I find his ... sort of desperately jovial attempts to stave off nihilism really affecting.
