I've been thinking about it especially in context of Mitchison's To the Chapel Perilous, another postwar Arthuriana which is also very clearly grappling with the horrible questions of human evil raised by WWII -- as far as I can tell they came out more or less at the same time and didn't influence each other at all, which is fascinating to me!
