Yay, season 4! Watching this shift in the show's focus and quality in real time was a trip. Initially a lot of people in my fandom circles were very skeptical of the idea of Seven, and felt it was a simple case of TPTB judging Kes as not hot enough and replacing her with eye candy. (It was more complicated than that, but fans didn't know that at the time because Jennifer Lien's mental health issues were being covered up.) Then Jeri Ryan turned out to be an amazing actor and the writers actually had good ideas for her character, and I think some fans didn't know how to react to that because it didn't fit their preconceived narrative of what these changes meant for the show at all.
