And like... do conscious trains run on tracks? Is it ethical to force a sentient being to be stuck on tracks? Since a train is a machine, can you move its mind to another machine and have trains run on a series of trucks instead? Can trains get dysphoria if they have cars added or removed? Will the trains have the ability to reproduce? Can they eject people from inside themselves or do they need helpers for that? Honestly, if I pretend for a minute that people giving the trains sentience are ethical and also love trains, just the story of them trying to figure out how to give the trains a good quality of life alone sounds fascinating.

God, the mobility questions about this society alone are absolutely wild. Will the trains have enough seats and standing areas for all the sentient animals, golden compass style?
