The reason there is martial arts figure skating, by the way, is that in the wonderful world of Ranma 1/2, everything is martial arts. There's martial arts okonomiyaki making. Martial arts flower arranging. Martial arts yoyo championship. Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

But when she arrived at martial arts pairs figure skating, Rumiko Takahashi hit upon a gold mine for both manga art and animation the likes of which have barely been seen. It is one of the great arcs of that anime and honestly of comedy anime in general. It is so perfectly ludicrous.

Despite the fact that I can already see the trans wank looming on the horizon, I was delighted with the announcement of the upcoming Ranma 1/2 anime remake because they are going to have the budget and the technology to go off on the martial arts pairs figure skating, and it would not surprise me if this was a major consideration in getting that remake greenlighted.
