Just finished. Apparently in the second half most of the things that are implied in the first are stated out loud, which is both satisfying and not, but, of course, it's a YA book. It turns out that the whole gender-change magic thing is not a thing, and the impish headmaster does not steal underwear, which is also good, and will teach me not to google before reading. That final chapter is incredibly satisfying, I don't think I know of anyone except Gautier and M. W. Turner that wrote final chapters so healing and uplifting, and it's not even the final book.
