skygiants: the aunts from Pushing Daisies reading and sipping wine on a couch (wine and books)
[personal profile] skygiants
[livejournal.com profile] oneechan19 and [livejournal.com profile] rymenhild did a meme: Pick 15 of your ships and write down a quote for each of them. Let your flist guess. Looking them up on IMDb or Google is cheating.

I like this meme! But I have decided to alter it a little. Instead of picking 15 romantic pairings, I have decided to pick 10 awesome Bechdel-test-passing ladyfriendships. (Which is not to say that some of them could not necessarily be romantic pairings, but anyway.) Go go go, guys!

ETA: Man, guys, you are all so awesome! I love how fast you are to pick up on the ladyfriendship quotes. :DDDD 10 is the only one left unguessed! All guessed now!

1. "We three [Lastnames]," she said in a church voice, "vow to try and put our name in history books because it's our very own and nobody can say it's because of our grandfathers."
She made a face at [X], who hurriedly held up her right arm, and grabbed [Y]'s and held it up too.
"We vow." She said this so low down deep in her inside that it sounded terribly impressive, then she whispered to [Y], "Go on, say 'we vow.'"
"We vow." [Y] tried to say it in the same deep voice as [X], but she did it wrong, and it sounded rather like a cat meowing.
- guessed by [livejournal.com profile] rowanberries, [livejournal.com profile] kattahj, [livejournal.com profile] genarti, [livejournal.com profile] lacewood, and [livejournal.com profile] rymenhild

2. X: It's strange . . .
Y: No way! Where? What?
X: Talking like this with another girl . . . I've never done it before.
Y: Oh . . . do you hate this kind of thing?
X: I might not hate it.
- guessed by [livejournal.com profile] genarti and [livejournal.com profile] rymenhild

3. "You'd better assign us a password," said [X]. She caught [Z]'s eye, trying to gauge her reaction. [Z] shrugged; [X] recognized it already, her you-guys-are-weird-but-I-guess-this-is-harmless gesture.
"I'm serious," said [Y].
"So am I. Something we won't forget in two years."
"The Snark is a Boojum."
They smiled at each other. [X] said reluctantly, "That doesn't mean anything to [Z]. It should be something we'll all remember."
[Z], delving around in her sewing basket, gurgled suddenly and said, "Pink curtains."
- guessed by [livejournal.com profile] ceitfianna, [livejournal.com profile] genarti and [livejournal.com profile] rymenhild

4. X: They're not wads . . . they're more like bundles . . . bunches . . .
Y: Clumps?
X: [delighted] CLUMPS! They're clumps! [*HUG*]
- guessed by [livejournal.com profile] rowanberries and [livejournal.com profile] genarti

5. "You're far too clever and nice to be stuck in that shop for the rest of your life. We talked about it, but we couldn't decide what to do."
"I'm all right," [X] protested. "Just a bit dull."
"All right?" [Y] exclaimed. "Yes, you prove you're all right by not coming near here for months, and then turning up in a frightful gray dress and shawl, looking as if even I scare you!"
- guessed by [livejournal.com profile] parcae, [livejournal.com profile] rowanberries, [livejournal.com profile] ceitfianna, [livejournal.com profile] genarti, [livejournal.com profile] lacewood, [livejournal.com profile] oneechan19 and [livejournal.com profile] rymenhhild

6. X: Are those really for me?
Y [holding vase of flowers]: Uh, no. They were sort of to smash [third party] over the head for luring you into a soulless life of fur-wearing because that's totally not who you are in any way.
X: You would do that for me?
Y: I am your best friend.
- guessed by [livejournal.com profile] kattahj, [livejournal.com profile] foreverdirt, and [livejournal.com profile] genarti

7. I pull up in front of her and dismount and bow. "Miss [X]?" I say, making my voice low and trying to keep a straight face.
"Y-yes," she says, all confused. "But who are you and where is . . ."
Then I give her my best grin and salute.
"Oh, [Y], no!"
"Do you like it?" I say, spinning around. "Ain't it a good fit?"
"[Y], we cannot!" she wails. "After the events of yesterday, I thought you would be somewhat chastened, but no . . . this is scandalous! You will be arrested and you will be taken and . . . someone will see you! Those are your . . . your limbs there!"
- guessed by [livejournal.com profile] genarti

8. X: At our age, we're adult in all kinds of ways. Wouldn't you agree, [Y]?
Y: R-really?
X: Yes. ^_^
- guessed by [livejournal.com profile] genarti and [livejournal.com profile] gramarye1971

9. X: I'll kick your ass!
Y: Go ahead.
X: I'll kill you!
Y: Why not?
X: . . . . you may be in a frilly dress, but you have guts.
Y: You're not gonna kill me?
X: No, because I still owe you.
Y: Debts, debts, debts . . . what a fool!
- guessed by [livejournal.com profile] copinggoggles (also by [livejournal.com profile] genarti, but her guess was cheating)

10. "You needn't fret," she said. "They didn't do anything much. But thanks, anyway."
"I ain't worried about you, [X]," snapped [Y]. "I only come along 'cos [Z] was fretting. What I say is, if a [blank] can't look after herself, she ain't got no business callin' herself a [blank]."

1. The Fossil sisters from Ballet Shoes!

4. Mai and Ty Lee, ATLA!

5. Sophie and... rats, one of her sisters, from Howl's Moving Castle?

1 is the Fossil girls, that's the only one I'm sure of (apart from 5, which has already been guessed). 3 might be the Poisoned Apples, and 6 might be Wendy and that friend of hers, but I'm not remotely sure of it.

I'm planning on doing this with the regular romantic couples, I just have to figure which ones.

6 is Wendy Watson and Lacey! 1 I totally recognise -- it was one of the many books I adored as a child -- but I can't place.

3 is Tam Lin and I'm blanking on all their names but the main girls. <333s

5 is Martha and Sophie though it was already said.

I'm a little worried by how many of these I know

1 is... the Ballet Shoes sisters? I think?

2: Rue and Duck from Princess Tutu.

3: Janet and... her two roommates whose names I forget. In Pamela Dean's Tam Lin.

4: Ty Lee and Mai, Avatar: The Last Airbender.

5: Sophie and her sister, in Howl's Moving Castle. Lettie? Or Martha. I think Martha.

6: Wendy Watson and Lacey Thornfield in The Middleman.

7: Jacky Faber and Amy in Bloody Jack -- well, the second book, and I'm blanking on the title.

Aaaand I can't think of the last three. Although the last at least sounds familiar.

Edit: I am guessing that 9 might be Kamikaze Girls! But that's cheating, because I've never actually seen or read canon; I'm going from the frilly dress + sheer density of insanity. (+ sounding translated from something.)

- unless that is from Princess Tutu, in which case dsflkjsad it sounds really like something they would say okay.

(I sumbit that if 2. is not Kamikaze Girls, then 9. must be.)

4. Ty Lee and Azula!
5. Sophie and Martha!

(Also: I'm totally surprised you didn't guess one of mine. I know you know number 15. If you don't, I might have to cry.)

Edit: Okay, I know I'm wrong about 2 and 4, which makes me feel really really silly because I should have known. But at least I'm sure about 5!

Curses! I'll have to go stare at them some more.

10... I am vaguely thinking Twites? I can't remember which? But this is a) kind of cheating because I saw somebody else's similar guess, and b) weak because I don't remember exactly who.

8 -- oh duh! Anthy and Utena?

It's a fun book (http://www.amazon.com/Poison-Apples-Lily-Archer/dp/0312367627), better than it seems, even if it takes long to get started and then ends rather abruptly. I saw the author cite DWJ as an influence, which is fairly awesome.

I got 1, 2, 3 and 5 on the first readthrough before looking at comments.

Why don't I know 10? The dialects tell me one speaker's Cockney, one's higher-class, and it's probably Regency or Victorian. I want Y to be Kim from the Mairelon books, but then I can't place X, and if X is Kim instead there aren't any women Y could be.

Ironically, I probably have read the Pratchett book that's really 10 - though in my defense I think it's been almost 10 years since I read the Witch books XD;

I thought 2 sounded familiar - HOW DID I MISS PRINCESS TUTU. Ahiru! Rue! <333
