Nov. 15th, 2010 01:48 amDear Yuletide Author,
First of all: whoever you are, I love you already for signing up, and for writing fic for one of these awesome sources! Anything I say below should absolutely be taken as guidelines and not rules, and if you already have brilliant ideas without any prompts from me then that's awesome! Work with whatever inspires you and have fun, and I guarantee you that I will love it.
Things I love include (but are not limited to): strong ladies, and ladies who are strong in different kinds of ways, and Bechdel Test-passing; ensemble-fic and found families and unlikely teams coming together; flawed characters working to overcome their flaws; people taking responsibility for their actions; ordinary characters who can be unexpectedly hardcore when the need hits and hardcore characters who can be unexpectedly ordinary when real life hits; mundane details interwoven with fantastic or dramatic events; comedy; tragedy; stories that mix the two together. As a sidenote, I also love crossovers like burning, so if you happen to get inspired by an amazing crossover idea, I totally encourage you to go with it.
Things I do not generally love include: character-bashing (especially, especially towards female characters) and stories that are disturbing/violent for the sake of being disturbing/violent (I'm totally okay with creepiness, and it could absolutely be called for in some of the fandoms I've requested this year, but I'm not a fan of gratuitous.) Basically, use your judgment.
And onto the specific requests!
Fandom: Twelve Kingdoms
Character: Nakajima Yoko
Details: I love Yoko enormously, and anything you write about her would make me happy, but I would especially love to see something about her and Rakushun (I ship it, but if you don't, that's okay! Their friendship is awesome too!) or Team Revolutionary Awesome Ladies with Suzu and Shoukei.
I love almost everything about Twelve Kingdoms, but Yoko is hands-down my favorite thing about it - character growth is a huge thing for me, and I love that her biggest flaw is that she always wants to try to please everyone, that this is recognized as a flaw, and how hard she works to overcome it and grows into a stronger person. I also love how important responsibility is in these books, and how everything about the magically-destined-king-of-a-magical-land trope is complicated and not at all easy. (I've seen most of the anime, but I know and love the light novels better; however, if you only know the anime, feel free to work off of that.) If you decide to go the Yoko/Rakushun route, I will be thrilled - I very rarely see fic for them (MYSTERIOUSLY, what fandom there is for this series seems to prefer the stoic blond bishounen or the suave playboy king to the cheery giant were-rat! PUZZLING), and I always love seeing relationships that grow out of genuine respect and trust and encouragement. But, as I said, if you don't ship it that's fine! I love their friendship as a friendship, too. I also really love that Yoko gets female friends her own age, and how Suzu and Shoukei and Yoko all parallel each other in their character development - so anything about these three girls just being teenaged friends, in the aftermath of all the serious events of the series, would make me very happy. (For the record, I emphatically do not ship Yoko/Keiki, given the backstory; I emphatically do ship Keiki/hilarious social incompetence.)
Fandom: Pumpkin Scissors
Character: Alice Malvin, Randel Oland
Details: Just about any fic at all in this fandom would fill me with joy, but I have a special soft spot for the partnership between Alice and Randel (romantic or platonic, either way) and how they mutually inspire each other. Alternately, I would also really love ensemble fic for the whole group!
First of all, this is another fandom where I know and love the manga better than the anime series, but if the anime is all you know that's totally cool! (Though for the record, most of what's published in English can be read online at mangafox.) Either way, one of my favorite things about this canon is the balance in tone between extremely dark themes and wacky humor, and between grimness and idealism; if you can manage to get some of that balance into your fic, I will love you forever. As I said, I am really invested in the relationship between Alice and Randel - as with Yoko and Rakushun, above, what's important to me is the really solid partnership between them, the trust they have in each other, and the way that they inspire each other to be better people. TEAM IDEALISM FOR THE WIN. I would not at all mind fic that incorporated romance, but if you don't read them as romantic that's totally fine. I also really love the whole team, though, and ensemble fic has a special place in my heart, so if what you wanted to write was case!fic - maybe something that expands on the worldbuilding, or reveals more of the creepier military secrets? - that would be incredibly awesome as well. (Bonus points for Stecchin getting to be involved and helpful!)
Fandom: Laurence Yep - Dragon of the Lost Sea series
Characters: Any
Details: Here I am going to be unhelpful and say I would just be incredibly excited to get any fic for this series at all! But if you are looking for ideas: anything written in Monkey's voice; anything about Civet, either pre-series or interacting with the others during the journey; and anything about the gang's interactions post-series, especially Monkey-Shimmer hijinksfic or Indigo and Shimmer and Thorn's complicated emotional triangle is sure to make me happy. (But so is anything else.)
This is my one repeat request for last year; I am going to KEEP HOPING that someone writes fic for these books, because, as I said last year, the world is fun and the chracters are awesome and they totally deserve it. Because the books are relatively short kid's books and mostly written in the first-person voices of the characters, that gives a lot of room to play around the edges, and I would love to see anything that is going on with the characters that the series doesn't show us - especially Civet, who I am completely fascinated by. If, in adding more depth, you wanted to go a little bit darker and elaborate on some of the creepiness that kid's books often skim over, that's fine by me. I am also really curious to see the rebuilding of Shimmer's kingdom postcanon, and how everyone settles into the mundane realities of their new and possibly uncomfortable roles, and how they manage to navigate the minefield that is all of their mountains of issues and ridiculously codependent relationships. Also, Monkey being unhelpful - or being surprisingly helpful! - is always awesome, too. BUT BASICALLY I really just want fic for these books to exist, so seriously, write whatever floats your boat and I will be incredibly happy.
Fandom: Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Characters: Any
Details: Again unhelpfully, I don't even know if I want anything specific here, I really just believe in my heart that there should be fic for this movie. So: family-building fic! War adventures fic! Hilarious magic adventures fic! Adorable middle-aged romance fic! Crossovers with other WWII-era canons! GO WILD.
This movie was an incredibly formative part of my childhood; I mean, it's basically Mary Poppins Fights Nazis! What could be better? It also hits a lot of my buttons in terms of created families, and extremely ordinary and flawed people who manage to do awesome things (albeit not without a lot of bickering and tripping over their own feet), and middle-aged ladies being incredibly hardcore. Any story that captures any of these elements, I will adore! I am an enormous history nerd and WWII is one of the periods that I'm dorkiest about, so feel free to integrate as much history as you want (but, uh, don't feel obliged to spend hours researching, either.) This is also the one of my requests that would probably lend itself best to crossovers, so if you get struck by any brilliant ideas, PLEASE FEEL FREE.
Last and most importantly: THANK YOU SO MUCH, and what will make me most happy about any fic is that you have fun with it! :D

Date: 2010-11-17 09:21 am (UTC)I can only ship Yoko with Rakushun, because he saved her from the madness she was falling into and their relationship is just so wonderful.
And I can only ship Keiki with hilarious social incompetence ... and stuffiness. Oh, Keiki.
