skygiants: Princess Tutu, facing darkness with a green light in the distance (teach me to hear mermaids)

1. I have a new layout! [livejournal.com profile] chaos_pockets made it for me, because she is lovely and talented! That is not me up there, but it is scarily like my hair on good days, and that's close enough for me.

2. Fionavarans on my flist: at long last, I finally managed to acquire Ysabel from the library (it was surprisingly in demand!) and finished it today. Thoughts:

I enjoyed it, a lot. I liked Ned; I thought Kate was underdeveloped, and GGK really likes his tragic love triangles, doesn't he, but that didn't matter to me as much because KIM AND DAVE SO MUCH AWESOME. My points of Kim and Dave awesome, let me show you them.
- Kim scolding Celtic Loverboy for running around dressed up as Cernan
- Kim's bluff of AWESOME ("oh yeah, well, you know what, LIADON is a personal BFF of mine and he will come kick your ass . . .")
- Dave VAULTING OVER THE WALL TO THE RESCUE . . . when the door was open. (Oh, Dave.)
- Dave wanting to teach Ned basketball moves
- Dave being firmly convinced that shaving off his beard = perfect disguise. (Oh, Dave, times a million. This is the point at which I started cracking up on the train from the sheer Daveness of it.)
- Kim bragging to Celtic Loverboy about Dave's mad mad skillz, and then essentially informing him that yes, she has known more tragic love stories than his, thank you, and does not CARE about his romantic trauma, so CRY HER A RIVER
- The fact as far as I can tell, Dave's version of announcing his credentials is informing Celtic enemies that "why yes, I was Ceinwen's boytoy"
- Kim reminding Dave that his unfortunate tendency to tackle mystical white boars on sight usually does not turn out well!

And speaking of mystical white boars . . . I really like the way that the ghost of Kevin pretty much hangs over this entire book. Kim is clearly thinking about him a lot, and so is Dave ("I have a witty nephew" - I don't think I'm reading too much into that) and I may joke about Kim's Liadon threat, but from the boar it seems pretty clear that his presence is important in the story.

Another thing I like? The fact that they use their cell phones. The moment in Dave's rescue of "How do you know all that?" "I have a CELL PHONE, doofus!" is priceless. Kay is trying really hard to integrate modern technology in the story; it's a little awkward sometimes (do we need to be constantly reminded of the iPod?), but other times I really like that it's there. So.

3. At some point, I will be making an IBARW post. But I need to figure out what I want to say.

4. It appears that not this weekend, but the weekend after that, I will be in New York with my mom - Thursday-Saturday or Sunday, probably. We're seeing a show Friday night, and doing a food tour Saturday morning (which, how much am I looking forward to? THIS MUCH) but much of the rest of the time my mom will be working/apartment hunting, so if any NY-types on my flist are going to have free time, let me know!
