Oct. 9th, 2007 03:25 pmI was supposed to go to a Career Fair today during my lunch period instead of doing my usual Tuesday Lunch Break Activity, which is watching Heroes. And I did! I was good! And . . . then it turned out pretty much all the represented companies were looking for either techies or Econ majors.
Yeah, not so much. After about the fifth "You're a what major? . . . oh. Um, good luck!" exchange with potential employers, I gave in and went back to watch Heroes instead.
Okay, the thing about this episode is that all the things I knew I was going to be really DO NOT WANT about (D.L.'s grave, Candice's death, West/Claire) I was spoilered for in advance by various promos. So, going in with extremely low expectations, I actually enjoyed the episode more than I thought I would. Specific reactions:
1. Most importantly: West, you even start with the turning Claire against Mr. Bennet and I will SMACK YOUR PUNK ASS DOWN. I already think you're a jerk and a creep and this episode's acting-up-in-the-only-class-this-high-school-offers shenanigans did NOT endear you to me any further - not to mention that telling a girl to shut up when she is RAISING LEGITIMATE CONCERNS so you can sweep her away in your freakishly strong arms is not calculated to win my heart. And Mr. Bennet owns my love, so seriously: DO NOT MESS.
2. That being said . . . Mr. Bennet you are kickass please don't die.
3. Letters from the past! I love that Hiro managed to think up a way to communicate with Ando, and while I am really not crazy about Hiro Magically Guiding Kensei to herotasticness, I have to admit I giggled a few times - most notably, at Hiro's description of Kensei punching EVERY EVIL IN THE FACE. And the end of this episode gives me hope that Hiro is going to rebel against the role he initially took on as Magical Guiding Sidekick, so we'll see how that goes.
4. M-CUBED. Oh, Triple-M, you are every bit as fantastic together as I thought you would be. Mohinder and Matt and married-couple bickering and Molly-hugs! And Matt totally shares the general opinion that Mohinder attempting to outsmart evil is sweet but really not plausible, which . . . pot kettle, Matt, but HAH.
5. I also laugh at the show pretty much making it canon that Peter just enjoys taking his shirt off at every opportunity - I mean, for more effective power practice, clearly. And Peter trying to shazam lightning out of his fingers. As for the rest of the Ireland storyline, I am ambivalent, but Caitlin is cute, and - okay, Peter getting the tattoo makes him family, right? Like, Caitlin's new pseudobrother? Just sayin'.
6. Although I was eyerolling at the beginning of this week's Wonder Twins storyline (seriously, Alejandro, you had to break into a car in the middle of a street in broad daylight? GENIUS.) I am actually now kind of excited. Maya attempting to intimidate the guards with her poster and then taking them out with black oil shows movement towards badass! I am all in favor of this. So Maya has pretty much won me over. And I have high hopes for Wonder Twins + Stoned Car Thief + Car Of Claire in terms of entertainment value, so I think that storyline will be picking up.
7. I am positive that we will see DL at least once more this season - probably in the Four Months Ago flashback episode, at least, because there is no way they can take us from last year's finale to this episode without some kind of transition. I would really really really really like to believe that he's secretly not dead, but I am probably fooling myself with this. :(
And in conclusion . . . a lot of the annoying stuff that we knew was going to happen is now out of the way, and I am pretty much relieved to have it done with. Bring on next week!

Date: 2007-10-09 11:18 pm (UTC)OMG I KNOW. And then he's all: you can heal but things still hurt? FUN! *GRABS EAR* The combination of West being an asshole and the show being like "no, he's really charming!" is the part that gets me. I don't want to dislike Claire's storyline, Becca. :(
2. I really, really don't think they would kill Bennet. Also -- I don't remember too well, but is it possible that the painting leaves room for it to be not-Haitian Bob instead of HRG?
And the end of this episode gives me hope that Hiro is going to rebel against the role he initially took on as Magical Guiding Sidekick, so we'll see how that goes.
Oh, I hope that's what it means.
6. Yes. I mean, I feel like I'm sort of salvaging things from those scenes that the writers didn't necessarily want or know how to get across, but I think "let's kill them and then bring them back to life!" is a hilariously awesome way to use those abilities. (Er. Ethically dubious, but.)
7. I was prepared for DL's death. But DL getting two minutes' worth of mourning time (1.5 of which were a fakeout, which, not funny), when Peter has gotten like twenty times that and he's not even dead?

Date: 2007-10-09 11:24 pm (UTC)2. I hope so, but I am not as confident as you. :( I have seen too many storylines where the end result of a redemption arc is that the redeemed person dies . . . presumably so that redemption cannot be further tainted? Or something?
6. Yes. I totally agree. And seriously, Maya trying to intimidate these two prison guards with her tiny self and her wanted poster just endears her to me. She came up with a plan! . . . it wasn't a great plan, but it's a start!
7. I KNOW. This is why I believe they have to go back to that. Either he is not dead, or Four Months' Ago will have a large DL storyline to show how he ended up dead, because - I mean, he was WALKING at the end of the finale! *FLAILS WITH ANGER*

Date: 2007-10-09 11:33 pm (UTC)2. I don't know -- I think he would have died in S1 if that's where they were going. Unless you mean taking down the Company and then dying, but the Claire part of the painting! NO.
6. *ruffles her hair* I miss her hat. Her hat could have helped her plan.
7. Well, my theory was that he died from the virus, and then somebody pointed out his grave says 2007, so -- that bodes well for flashbacks. But again: even so.

Date: 2007-10-10 04:24 am (UTC)2. I want to believe you so much! And yet I am still not convinced. Damn Heroesverse and its emo.
6. I agree. Hats help with all plans.
7. I also theorize that he died from the virus, but . . . yeah. Seriously. THEY BE STEALIN MAH GRIEF PERIOD.

Date: 2007-10-10 09:27 am (UTC)2. Well, so far Heroes has not been very unpredictable in who it kills off. Minor characters, unpopular characters, female and nonwhite characters. They haven't killed off any popular major characters, because it would be bad business. If Matt can survive three bullets to the chest, and Nathan and Peter can survive a cliffhangery explosion in the sky -- I'll eat my hat if HRG bites it.
6. Maya's hat > Peter's hat.
7. And jeez, poor Leonard Roberts.

Date: 2007-10-10 05:17 pm (UTC)2. Was Matt a very popular character? *curious* - not that whether or not he is negates what you're saying really, I just wonder.
Also, aren't white dudes are fair game for killing if they're evil/ambiguous and not part of the Fangirl Shirtless Frenzy? For the most part, Bennet is too old to be part of the Shirtless Brigade, which I think puts him more at risk than a lot of the others.
6. Truth.
7. EXRA TRUTH. :(

Date: 2007-10-09 11:20 pm (UTC)AND AND AND.
Bob: *puts hand on Mohinder's shoulder* You're in the family now.
IT IS INAPPROPRIATE FRATERNAL TOUCHING.
6. I . . . I like kickass women, yes. But I kind of hate it when a show establishes a character as non-violent/scared/whatever and then turns around and has them remorselessly kill people. Not just women, men too -- Hiro killing Sylar works because he struggles over it. Consistent characterization is all I ask!

Date: 2007-10-09 11:28 pm (UTC)(Really, it entertains me so much that Peter is just like, "I have a family to have inappropriate relationships with now! This is all I need! Box? What box?")
6. You are totally right. But I have been so worried and slightly bored by Maya and Alexander so far that any move in the direction of more dynamic characters/storyline pleases me - so I am really just hoping that they continue with the more interesting and self-possessed development. (Also, I like to think that she was all, "Well, Alejandro can just bring them back to life," as opposed to "THEY MUST DIE.")

Date: 2007-10-09 11:33 pm (UTC)Am I the only person who wishes that they'd established Alejandro can bring people back in the first ep, not the second? Now I'm never sure what to expect.

Date: 2007-10-09 11:48 pm (UTC)They weren't moving around even when Alejandro came back, anyway.

Date: 2007-10-10 04:25 am (UTC). . . actually, I think the first and second episode Maya-and-Alejandro storylines could easily, easily have been fit into one single episode. Or the first one could even have been cut, because . . . what did it do that the second one didn't do? (Hence my frustration as re: painfully slow moving.)

Date: 2007-10-10 08:19 am (UTC)I'm so very convinced West is working for the Compnay and trying to turn Claire against Daddy Bennet. HE'S SEEN MR BENNET in 2:01, when he almost hit her with the car. Mr Bennet was right there.

Date: 2007-10-10 05:09 pm (UTC)(Not all of it. The show still clearly thinks that he is being charming when is being JERKY AS HELL. But some of it!)
