skygiants: the aunts from Pushing Daisies reading and sipping wine on a couch (wine and books)
[personal profile] skygiants
Dear Yuletide Author,

Thank you so much for being wonderful! I am so full of joy that you're going to create something for me. My main request is, whatever you're doing, please have fun! If you enjoy yourself writing, THAT WILL MAKE IT THE BEST PRESENT. :D

My requests this year are super lady-heavy, so it probably will not surprise you to hear that I love female characters, female friendships, and women who are strong and complex and nuanced in different kinds of ways. Other things I love: ensemble-fic; sibling dynamics; found families; cross-dressing and gender-play; flawed characters working to overcome their flaws; complicated world-building; people having human, mundane reactions to extraordinary events; comedy, poignancy, and stories that mix the two. As a sidenote, I also love crossovers like burning, so if you happen to get inspired by an amazing crossover idea, I totally encourage you to go with it.

I would prefer not to see character-bashing (especially towards female-characters), and although I'm happy to run with creepy or dark explorations of the universes, I'm generally not a fan of anything gratuitous.

Fandom: 7 Seeds
Characters: Iwashimizu Natsu, Nijiko(7 Seeds), Shishigaki Ran
Details: My favorite things about 7 Seeds are the female friendships, and the team-building, and all the small human frustrations of the apocalypse, and how everyone grows into themselves as a person. I would love ensemble-fic for Team Summer B or Team Mashup Autumn-Summer A, or character development fic for any of these characters. . . or fic about Ran and Nijiko being rivals with let's say unconventional morals who learn to respect each other and/or make out. ANY OF THAT STUFF.

It's really hard to narrow down what I want for fic for this fandom because it's basically ANYTHING; I love almost everybody so much! My secret favorite team is Team Summer B (team adorable failboats!) and my favorite Summer B character is Natsu, and my favorite Natsu ship is Natsu/herself, and also Natsu/TEAM SUMMER B TEAM FRIENDSHIP. Team Summer B's hijinks are eternally hilarious to me -- more wacky post-apocalyptic talent shows, please! -- and I also love their sheer delight in discovering more about the world. I also love Ran and Nijiko A LOT, and their own very different kinds of character developments. I would love to see more of the general dynamics of Team Mashup during the time that they were building their village (and I especially love Koruri and Haru) but these women in all their hard competence have a particular fascination for me. I totally ship it, but if you don't, that's okay! Anything about their dynamic will make me really happy. (Is it even possible for Nijiko to have real feelings of caring/responsibility towards other people? My head says no but my heart MAYBE SAYS YES. Only you potentially know the answer, mystery author!)

Fandom: 20th Century Boys
Characters: Endo Kanna, Koizumi Kyoko, Ichihara Setsuko
Details: I crave Twentieth Century Teen Girl Squad fic! What about that time that they utilized Kanna's +10 charisma and Kyoko's obsessive knowledge of Japanese post-apocalyptic bandom to organize a music concert together to save the world? Alternately, I would love anything about Lawyer Setsuko's efforts to take down the Friend regime via EXTENSIVE LEGAL LOBBYING.

While I love almost everything about 20th Century Boys, one of my greatest sorrows is the fact that we don't get to see Kanna and Kyoko interact nearly as much as I want. They're very different people, but they've been through a heck of an experience together -- there have to have been a few times when it made a difference to have another teenaged girl around. (I mean, I know my apocalypse would always be brightened by the presence of Koizumi Kyoko, although that is partly because Koizumi Kyoko is a SHINING STAR. I suggested a fic about their time organizing that huge music concert, but that's just one idea. Other ideas: did they ever hang out while Kanna was running her revolutionary cell? Did Kyoko ever ask Kanna for help? Or maybe postcanon, Kanna needs Kyoko's help on something! MAYBE THEY FIGHT CRIME. If you're not feeling the Teen Girl Squad, though, I am also incredibly fascinated by Ichihara Setsuko -- she's probably my favorite character after Kyoko. I have a ton of respect for her and her cynical determination to keep on fighting with her LAWYER POWERS. I want to know everything about her life during the Friend regime. What is her organization like? What victories has she managed to win? DEFINITELY SHE FIGHTS CRIME.

Fandom: The Summer Prince - Alaya Dawn Johnson
Characters: June Costa, Bebel
Details: I would love to see more of June and Bebel's relationship, especially postcanon! Whether that stays as friendship-rivalry or something more is up to you; I ship it, but you don't have to. I'm also really interested in how June balances her new role with her self-identity as an artist, so if you're not into Bebel I would love to see more anything more about June's adjustment, and how Palmares Tres is adjusting, too.

I loved so much about this book, but my favorite relationship was definitely June's rivalry-turned-partnership with Bebel -- and it seemed clear to me, at least that Bebel had a HUGE crush on June. So I would love to see anything more about Bebel and June's dynamic, especially postcanon; I ship them and would be totally up for a romance, but if that's not your thing, I also love their friendship as a friendship! I'm also really interested in the question of how June grows into herself as a political leader, and how and if she's able to balance that with her artistic ambition. The relationship between art and politics is one of the central questions of the book, and it's clearly going to go on being a question postcanon. Also, the changes in Palmares Tres in the wake of Enki's sacrifice are definitely going to be challenging to navigate -- and none of the problems facing the city are going to just go away, because there are no easy answers to any of them. So if you don't care much about Bebel and just want to write about how June deals with her new position, and how Palmares Tres deals with her, that would also be awesome!

Fandom: 불의 여신 정이 | Goddess of Fire
Characters: Shim Hwa-ryeung, Son Haeng-soo
Details: I am SO FASCINATED by Haeng-soo, Pottery Mafia Boss. Like, this is a woman who negotiates with the movers and shakers of the realm and runs a huge shady empire based on pottery! Please tell me more about the underground pottery mafia, and about Hwa-ryeung's years under Haeng-soo's tutelage, growing into becoming the Next Top Pottery Mafia Queen.

Okay, I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I haven't actually finished this series yet -- though I hope to before Yuletide! -- but I am just so taken with Haeng-soo and her relationship with Hwa-ryeung. Like, this woman is clearly BOSS, and she clearly values Hwa-ryeung, not just for her pottery skills, but also for her cool head and practicality. I'm most interested in Hwa-ryeung's years of childhood and young adulthood during the timeskip when Yoo Jung is presumed dead and Hwa-ryeung is being groomed for leadership. (Because . . . I have seen all those episodes . . .) Like, what kind of shady pottery mafia acts is she getting indoctrinated into? But I'd also like to hear more about Haeng-soo herself -- how did she get into this position and build her pottery mafia to begin with? Why does she wield so much respect?

Fandom: The Provenance Game - Freya Marske
Characters: Brownyn Flax
Details: I love Bronwyn and I'd love to see any more of her archival adventures or her relationship with her family, but I also just super love this world and this LIBRARY MAGIC. What do other super dangerous archival missions look like?

So here is where I admit that I myself am a trained archivist, and if you know anything about archiving or library science and want to get super nerdy with archival principles, NOW WITH BONUS LIFE AND DEATH STAKES, I would be ALL ABOUT IT. But please don't feel like you need to have special archiving knowledge to write for this! The world here is so great, with so many rich details to be picked up on; I just think it would be fun to see more people play in it. If you decide to focus on Bronwyn (or any of the other characters, like poor Pinny) that's awesome; if you want to write about one of Bronwyn's classmates or professors or predecessors, or a totally different country or time long ago in this world's past, that's awesome too.

As a sidenote, this is a short story available in the Fight Like a Girl anthology (which can be purchased from Amazon or Smashwords) and is probably the easiest canon to devour quickly if you find yourself stuck on a matched prompt.

The pedant in me wanted to note that "Haeng-soo" is not her first name, but her title, meaning that she's the boss/leader (in this case, of the merchant house).

Oooh, thanks for the book rec!

I wish I had some likelihood of being matched with you, but our fandoms don't overlap. (blows you a kiss from a faraway tower in a distant land)
