OK, I have a lot of questions -- especially about how John Boyega is the only person in the new faux!Empire who learned how to use speech contractions, where did he learn that? who in Stormtrooper Training 101 taught him about jokes and sarcasm? important worldbuilding questions! -- but I don't caaaaaaare because it was so much fun and the new cast are all so charming and the characters all like each other so much?? EVERYONE LIKES AND RESPECTS EACH OTHER. Basically the new trio is just one enormous mutual admiration society. Much affection, many hugs, I'm looking very much forward to Star Wars Episode 8: The Hugs Strike Back.

Also nine-year-old Becca, who watched A New Hope and spent all her time worrying about the poor conscripted Stormtroopers, is feeling SO VINDICATED right now.

NINE-YEAR-OLD BECCA HAD MANY CONCERNS. (Nine-year-old Becca probably also just wanted to be contrary by pointing out something the rest of her family didn't, but you know.)

I didn't know at first why I was so shocked and delighted to walk away from a big-budget sci-fi movie really believing that the leads liked and cared about each other -- but then I was thinking back to the number of recent highly-anticipated sci-fi films (Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, even Star Trek and definitely ST:ID) that, in addition to whatever other flaws they had, basically had people argue all movie and then told me to believe that they cared about each other deeply and were willing to do deeply selfless things for each other and DID NOT SHOW THEIR WORK.

And I did not get that from this film at ALL. The emotional connections were shown! They were all just instantly charmed by each other, and since they were all such charming human beings I had no difficulty believing it! It was just such a relief not to be watching the big emotional moments towards the end going "but ... why .......??"

I LOVE THE NEW TRIO!!!

I admit, I am excited for OT3 fic, but I am SO EXCITED for all the friendship fic! SO MUCH FRIENDSHIP!!!

I am so getting trio figures and making a special shelf for them. ;_; oh no, so much money will be spent on the star wars.

THEY'RE ALL ADORABLE. I would just watch them hang out in a room attempting to fly a strange spaceship. Plot, who needs plot? How about a heartwarming slice-of-life ensemble show, give me that!

THEY DELIGHT IN EACH OTHER'S COMPANY. IT'S THE BEST. I kept waiting for one of them to be truly mean or annoyed at someone else and it never happened, Han's internal monologue of how baffled he is by these children must really be something.

Afterwards someone pointed out to me that Rey is very Nausicaa and I realized that Rey and Finn are a classic "super meaningful-undefined-romantic-friendship-at-first-sight" Ghibli pairing

Yes!! It was all so refreshingly good-hearted! Like, not that I'm not also into bickering dynamics, but I do not need or want that with these children, I just want them to go on being impressed and delighted by each other. *__*

(Ha! I have only dim impressions of Nausicaa but yes, that is ONE HUNDRED PERCENT correct.)

IT WAS A DELIGHT. I have only the most glancing accquaintance with the original/prequel trilogies (I used to babysit a kid who was obsessed with it, so I saw them then) but I still enjoyed every second of this movie. Oscar Isaac is a golden god. I want to give Finn a giant hug. Rey is the sci-fi heroine we deserve.

(I was sad about the Han/Leia stuff, though. Like I said, I'm not what you'd call an old school SW fan, but even I know you don't mess with Han/Leia!)

I WANT TO HUG ALL OF THEM. I am so happy with this movie for allowing me all the vicarious hugs I needed and deserved.

(I was sad about the Han/Leia stuff, but not as sad as I might have been -- at least they left us a good chunk of relatively happy times for fanfic to reside in before A CERTAIN PERSON RUINED EVERYTHING, BEN.)

It was such a delight of a film!! I was hoping for ridiculous overblown sci-fi epic joy and I was NOT DISAPPOINTED.

YES and there was just so much delight in it! I mean, I know a lot of terrible stuff happened but Rey just spent so much of the movie being thrilled that she got to meet these people and Poe spent the ENTIRE MOVIE impressed by everyone and full of happy (which was so nice for "the Resistance's Best Pilot let me tell you, I expected him to be a jerk) and Finn was SO delightful and happy THE WHOLE THING WAS SO HAPPY.

I also really appreciated that a) Leia and Han did not hate each other at all and b) I was supposed to hate the angsty white boy who did awful things.

Yeah, based on previous examples, I was expecting at least someone to be a little bit of a jerk but there was such a WONDERFUL PAUCITY OF JERKITUDE. Except around Emo Kylo Ren, which: I am very happy to participate in the general mockery, it is well-deserved, appropriate and hilarious.

SUCH A GOOD MOVIE. I need to see it again.

(Relatedly, have you read The Lost Stars? It's one of the new tie-in novels and it's about two kids who join up with the Empire, since you mentioned Stormtroopers.)
