Nov. 1st, 2016 12:12 pmDear Festividder,
I am so sorry this post is so delayed and I hope the lack of details has not stressed you out! It is not because I am not excited to participate, only that I have been traveling internationally and as a result did my sign-ups surreptitiously on my phone while at a conference in Berlin -- ANYWAY I am very excited to be doing Festivids this year and to have you make a vid for me!
As I said in my letter last year, I like many different kinds of vids, and many different kinds of music for that matter -- fast-paced action vids, quiet character studies, explorations of friendship and relationships, celebration vids, critique-y vids, vids that center themselves on a perfect and terrible pun ... OK I'm aware this is not very helpful. I LIKE EVERYTHING. I am also still catching up on many years' worth of vidding, so if you vid a song that's been vidded thirty times before, that's A-OK, it will probably be still new to me! And it will certainly be new to most of these tiny, amazing fandoms, on which more below!
Blazing Saddles
This is not my favorite Mel Brooks film but I think it may be one of the best Mel Brooks films, if you know what I mean. I would love a really wacky vid that embraces the genre satire; I also think you could do some really neat stuff going in the exact opposite direction and digging into sharp edges of what the film is actually about. If you felt like crossing over with other Mel-Brooks-verse films, I could also imagine that being kind of neat, but definitely in no way required!
Charade
I love this movie tremendously; it's been one of my favorites ever since I was a kid. It is simultaneously so cool and SO RIDICULOUS, much like both Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant's characters in it. You could make a neat thriller-y vid to this or you could make a vid that played up all the deep absurdities of the film and I would love both just about equally. Or something I have not thought of yet!
The Chronicles of Narnia series [TV]
Speaking of things I grew up on! The new movies are pretty, but the TV series with its terrible greenscreen and truly special effects is the Narnia of my heart. My favorite was the Silver Chair movie -- I love bratty children who make poor decisions and then get character development, so obviously Jill and Eustace have always been my favorite Narnia kids -- but it would also be cool to see something bigger and more epic in scope across all the films. Or whatever else about the movies gets you excited!
The Middleman
This show is so bright-colored and energetic and weird and I love just about everything that it chooses to be. I love everybody in this bar, but if it's a character-centric vid, I'd prefer to center Wendy over MM -- that said, the ensemble is one of the show's biggest strengths, and an ensemble vid/overall show vid would be fantastic too!
Om Shanti Om
AND SPEAKING OF BRIGHT-COLORED AND ENERGETIC AND WEIRD. My two favorite things about this movie are probably a.) how deftly it handles the whiplash tone shifts from comedy to GOTHIC DRAMA and b.) the fact that Ghost Shanti at the end is just like 'step aside, man, I got this.' Also, the dancing. And the perfect parodies. And the amazing costumes. OK, I love a lot of things about this movie. Also, it's beautiful, and will make a beautiful vid regardless of where you decide to go with it! (But Ghost Shanti is definitely the best character, for the record.)
Rear Window
The ambiguities are what make this movie so interesting -- like, Jimmy Stewart is always charming, but we all know that the murderer is not the only thing that makes this movie creepy. I'd love a vid that played around with the idea of watching and being watched and where the entertainment is coming from.
Underground
This show is one of the best things I've seen this year. It's haunting, and definitely hard to watch at times, and I would absolutely be OK with a vid that was both of those things also. At the same time, it also offers some incredible heroism -- Noah and Ernestine and, especially, Rosalee all have really amazing growth arcs through the show and some very significant moments of triumph, and I would love a vid that showcased those as well. (I will say that I would rather the vid not focus on Elizabeth, John, August, or any of the other white characters.)
Victor Victoria
OK BACK TO THE MADCAP. The narrative trope of 'girl engages in cross-dressing and gender-binary-queering hijinks for fun and profit' is one of my most reliable jams, and honestly who doesn't want to spend several hours of their life watching Julie Andrews sashay around suavely in a suit? Nobody. There is nobody. A vid that played with the gender stuff would be amazing, but honestly a musical-spectacle-celebration vid would make me just as happy.
Once again, thank you so much, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what you come up with
