In last week's Hotel del Luna costume polls, our heroine's extremely Gothic farewell outfit to her dying manager garnered an overwhelming majority of the votes:



This week might be a tougher competition, since Jang Man Wol wears no less than ELEVEN different outfits over the span of the hour (and that's not even counting the twenty minutes she spends in last episode's bedsheet.) Let's dig in!

Honestly I think this flashback outfit is broadly the same as the first episode's SWORD, but the bandit scarf gives it enough of a different vibe that I'm willing to give it a new slot in appreciation.



Also I love the extra bright patch of magenta! It's important to have a pop of color.

Unfortunately, she literally never stands up in this outfit, so we never get the full view, but I think it's basically just a black evening dress layered over a gauze blouse?



On the one hand the evening dress doesn't necessarily seem the most well-fitted, but on the other hand if you're going to throw together an evening dress outfit for your casual lounging, I guess you might as well wear one that's not too tight to be comfy. This seems like basically something you wear when your laundry gets low and you start pulling weird pieces out of the back of your wardrobe, and I respect that.

This is a perfectly nice long dress with an interesting print and I have no beef with it.



Like, given her vast expanse of options to choose from, might I have worn something a little more Goth for the exorcism? Yes. But I can't fault her for it, she doesn't seem to have known she was going to be attending an exorcism and one can't always dress for every unexpected event that happens to come up in the course of a day.

This outfit ... I mean ...... it is what it is.



Kind of hard to really make it your own, stylistically, but I'd say she wears it well.

I really and truly love this look. The gold looks amazing on her. She's like a walking Klimt painting!



Bonus points for the fact that she clearly dressed so that she would match this giant picture frame when standing in front of it. That is dedication to the craft.

However this too is an amazing look -- I love the fact that she's managed to be simultaneously Goth and glam by layering the red leather coat over one of her signature frilly black blouses.




Full length views! Would this coat look good on me? No, probably not. Do I want it desperately anyway? ABSOLUTELY YES.

I think this is basically just a black full-length negligee? This is what a vampire puts on when she says 'let me just slip into something a little more comfortable.'



Detail view of the neckline. It's ... very frilly. I hope that's not tulle because it seems like it would be quite scratchy ... but I do like the tiny black flowers of whatever the under-layer is.

It is SO hard to tell what's going on with this outfit from the two glimpses we get but I'm always weak for something red and flowy.



It's EITHER something vaguely historical OR another incredibly dramatic dressing gown. I want details!

We get a little more time to appreciate this Joseon-era hanbok, which I'm glad of because it's extremely pretty.



Love the blues, love the patterns, would love for someone who knows more about Korean historical fashion to tell me about her over-garment which I know I've seen in kdramas before and am trying desperately to place!

While we're touring historical fashions, though, I will however admit to a special fondness for this Eponine look.

Another outfit that she literally never stands up in, but we get a surprisingly good view of it regardless.




Or at least of the adorable beret, which is clearly the most important element.

Oh my god, STRONGLY Éponine. I just… get you a woman who can do both.

Oh! Oh! This was such a hard choice. I really loved the golden gown... and the astronaut look had a certain sheer WTFness about it that was hard to pass up...and the hanbok!!!!

But in the end I had to go with the Eponine look, because she's just rocking that newsboy cap.

I don't know why you say that, as you own one bright red, boldly cut coat in which you look good already.

With every post, I grow more confused about the plot of this show and more jealous of IU for getting to play dress up.

Look, sometimes you have a really hard time accepting that one of your top candidates for a job you're hiring for (as a ghost hotel manager) took a different offer (as an astronaut on the ISS, a position which really does not seem to have an overlapping skillset), so you try to meet them where they're at so you can see if they're up for negotiation, and it turns out ... they are not.

The unavoidable truth is that a Newsie outfit is a surefire way to my heart!

I know, this was such a difficult episode for me! Generally there's very little that could top a newsboy cap for me but the gold outfit is just so stylized ... it hurt me to do it though.

And probably never will again! (Though, I mean, I don't know. We've got seven episodes left, she could easily go back. She's clearly got the wardrobe prepped.)

It's true, but the difference is that my coat is very definitely cut to flatter people with hips that don't lie and her coat is very definitely not. >.>

This one is particularly confusing because a lot of the outfits come from Flashbacks Through History ... but then, also, the astronaut.

I was like "hmm, like this one, like that one" and then I got to Eponine and wow, yes, that look. Definitely that look.

I had to follow my heart and say astronaut, but Eponine was a close second.

My favourite look is the smug smile when she says "Then please return."

The golden gown is more beautiful and would have gotten my vote, but the astronaut wins for sheer unexpectedness and delight. Get you a gal who can do both, I say.

I had to vote for the negligee because I always think of Nanny Ogg calling it a neggliggle and it cheers me up.

The plot is basically gender reversed Goblin + Master's Sun, but the best part is def IU and her fabulous wardrobe.

This one was tough! But that red leather coat, with the black ankle boots and the Edwardian blouse underneath, is just so very "devil don't care" that I have to give it props. Wow. The golden gown almost overcame it, though. I'm weak for evening gloves.

Like, here's the thing: is it particularly exciting for a spacesuit? No. Is the fact that she wears a spacesuit at all a style statement in and of itself? FOR SURE YES.

The thing about the red and the gold is that they both just really work as outfits. Every element carefully chosen to enhance the overall effect and that effect is WONDERFUL.

Okay but I'm currently furious at myself, because this week we watched an episode that included a flashback to the golden gown scene and I'D FORGOTTEN THAT UNDERNEATH SHE'S WEARING LEOPARD PRINT LEGGINGS. This was information the people needed to have and I've failed you all!

Going through these late because we're watching the drama right now, very slowly. Just wanted to comment that the overgarment you see in the Joseon-era hanbok is an apron! I have a modernized version that I got on my last trip, it's very comfy. Also the historical one before that is supposed to be Goryeo-era hanbok.
