I liked the novelette "Rude Mechanicals" in spite of myself. It's just an endless chase after a diamond MacGuffin, but the history of the diamond ("Louis XIV gave it to his favorite popsy, but then...") and the iterative chase all over a very specific historical Hollywood, is quite the tour de force.
