What's interesting to me is that I feel like a lot of Kdramas used to be the same about "yeah, your parent is terrible, but obviously you've just got to suffer that!" but recently (I'm thinking of Beyond Evil and even It's Okay Not to Be Okay in particular) they've acknowledged that...sometimes your parent is terrible and you owe them nothing!

Which I can't see happening in a Chinese context because of the extreme censorship. Anyone breaking ties with their parents would be way too Antisocial for them.
